Measurement method and procedure of internal resistance of lead-acid battery

1.Procedure for Battery Resistance Tests
Use the following test procedure or use the capacity test procedure described in IEEE std. 1188.



Step 1. Make sure all battery connections are clean, tight and free of corrosion.
Pay attention to the insulation of tools to avoid short-circuiting of batteries.

Step 2. Equalizing charge the batteries for 12hrs;
Constant voltage & limited maximum current charging is the method for giving an equalizing charge.
Charge voltage set to 14.1V/block @25℃, chargers should be current limited to 25 Amperes per 100-Ampere Hour battery rating.

Step 3. Disconnect the battery charger, and rest 1 hours.
Step 4. Read and record the voltage of each battery block by volt meter.
Step 5. Use the Internal Resistance Tester to test the each battery block.
Pay attention that the measurement probe should touch the battery terminals directly, not the screws.
Read and record the Internal Resistance values.
Step 6. Repeat step 5 three times.
Calculate the average value of three times internal resistance values.


Note:
1.IEC and IEEE standards, there is no internal resistance of the relevant provisions, if want to determine the battery whether comply with the standard or requirement, it need to be based on the battery capacity test.

2.Internal resistance test does not indicate the actual capacity of the battery it does provide base line data from which changes can be trended over time as the battery normally deteriorates. This can be very useful in trouble analysis during the periodic maintenance activities.
